Esports Betting Bill

Known colloquially as the Esports Betting Bill, House Bill 4826 amends the stateseSports wagering Fortnite Ninja legal sports betting industry regulations to allow betting sites to accept wagers on esports events alongside traditional sports event.

Effectively, the bill now classifies esports betting as being legally the same as sports betting and as such, inhabitants of West Virginia are now going to be able to bet legally on esports as they can any traditional sporting event.

One of the most interesting aspects of the bill is the broad and encompassing definition of esports it contains, describing esports as aelectronic sports or competitive video game played as a game of skill for spectators.”

Compared to other states, this is a very broad definition and the lack of other legislation means that citizens of West Virginia will not have some of the limitations imposed on them when it comes to esports betting as is the case in other states.

In New Jersey, for example, betting on esports is capped at a maximum of $100 per bet and the maximum amount you can win from an esports bet is limited to $500.

In West Virginia, there will be no such limits for its customers.

Esports Betting Roll Out?

While esports betting has become legal in West Virginia with immediate effect uponLuxor ESports Arena the passing of the bill on March 28, it is likely going to take a little time for companies to get the first esports betting opportunities available online for customers on the state.

Given the ad-hoc and fragmented nature of esports betting across the United States, which ranges from states where it is not allowed at all, to other states like West Virginia which does permit all forms of esports betting it means that companies do not have a simple esports betting template that they can use across their sites.

As such, companies like FanDuel, DraftKings or BetMGM, who will likely offer esports betting alongside their traditional sports betting services in the state, will need to develop their own esports betting services that have been designed to meet the rules and regulations in West Virginia.

What Esports Will West Virginia Inhabitants Be Able To Bet On?

When it comes to the esports that will be available to customers in West Virginia,DraftKings CS:GO Scoring and Rules you can be sure that the trio of esports known as “the big three” will be available in the state.

This includes League of Legends (LoL), Defense of the Ancients 2 (Dota 2) and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO).

Alongside these games, other esports titles that will likely feature include Overwatch, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Call of Duty, Rocket League and various sporting-based esports such as FIFA Soccer tournaments and NBA2K esports events.

Sites like DraftKings and FanDuel also run Fantasy games on esports, such as Fantasy CS:GO as shown in the image above.

One positive for natives of Virginia is that many companies in the esports industry have been preparing to expand into the United States region over the next year or two and as such, many should be ready to go with their latest offering for the state in a relatively short space of time.
