Are We In For A Shock At The 2022 Academy Awards?

The announcements for the nominees of the 2022 Academy Awards has been made and we now know the five Actors, Actresses and Directors, plus the ten films, that have been nominated to receive the famous “Oscar” trophy.

Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall will co-present the show, each taking responsibility for an hour.

The Power of the Dog has the most nominations with 12 across various categories including Best Actor, Best Picture and Best Director awards.  Next on the list is Sci-Fi epic, Dune which has ten nominations.

Frances McDormand will present the best actor award, with Anthony Hopkins presenting the best actress and Chloe Zhao presenting the award for the best director.

With the glitzy event set to take place on Sunday 27th March, are there any betting markets on the event that could provide us with a longer odds shock win?

Well, we decided to take a look at the different options across four of the main prize categories at the ceremony, together with the latest odds on each of those selections from DraftKings Sportsbook.

Best Actress Betting Odds

Nominees

  • Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tommy Faye)
  • Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter)
  • Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers)
  • Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos)
  • Kristen Stewart (Spencer)

Betting Odds With DraftKings

  • Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) – +120
  • Kristen Stewart (Spencer) +200
  • Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) +400
  • Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tommy Faye) +500
  • Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) +1400

Who Will Win?

This looks like being the most open of all the awards being presented with Nicole Kidman the early favourite, however Olivia Colman has been a darling of the awards judges in recent years and she cannot be ruled out. For me, it is probably between Kidman and Colman for this prize and I think Colman may just get the nod.

Best Actor Betting Odds

Nominees

  • Javier Barden (Being the Ricardos)
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog)
  • Andrew Garfield (tick, tick…BOOM)
  • Will Smith (King Richard)
  • Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth)

Betting Odds With DraftKings

  • Will Smith (King Richard) -300
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) +300
  • Andrew Garfield (tick, tick…BOOM!) +550
  • Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth) +2500
  • Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos) +3500

Who Will Win?

Will Smith could well earn his first Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams, father of tennis stars Venus and Serena with Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Garfield his direct rivals for the award. As good as Cumberbatch and Garfield were, I think Will Smith has this one locked up.

Best Director Betting Odds

Nominees

  • Kenneth Branagh (Belfast)
  • Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car)
  • Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza)
  • Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog)
  • Steven Spielberg (West Side Story)

Betting Odds With DraftKings

  • Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) -750
  • Steven Spielberg (West Side Story) +900
  • Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) +900
  • Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) +1600
  • Rysuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) +1600

Who Will Win?

There’s no contest for me here, Jane Campion should get the Best Director gong to add to her Best Original Screenplay award for 1994’s The Piano and there is every chance that she could double up in the best picture category too.

Best Picture Betting Odds

Nominees

  • Belfast
  • Coda
  • Don’t Look Up
  • Drive My Car
  • Dune
  • King Richard
  • Licorice Pizza
  • Nightmare Alley
  • The Power Of The Dog
  • West Side Story

Betting Odds With DraftKings

  • The Power of the Dog -175
  • Belfast +250
  • West Side Story +600
  • Dune +1600
  • Licorice Pizza +1600
  • King Richard +2000
  • Coda +2000
  • Drive My Car +2800
  • Don’t Look Up +2800
  • Nightmare Alley +4000

Who Will Win?

For me, Belfast is the only real challenger to The Power of the Dog here and while Branagh’s Northern Irish picture is excellent, Campion’s film has such powerful performances from Cumberbatch as well as Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst, and being so elegantly put together, it is hard to see anything beating it to the best picture prize here.

Remember, the Oscars will take place on Sunday 27th March, so tune in to see who lifts the prizes!
