Who Are You Backing To Win The Premier League Title Today?

For 37 games so far, the Premier League title race has unfolded in dramatic, unexpected and at times, unusual fashion.

Now, with just one single game left of the season for all teams, which takes place today (Sunday), it is now down to these final games to decide who wins the coveted Premier League title.

In the box seat are Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who have 90 points from their 37 games and who face Aston Villa at their home ground at the Etihad Stadium knowing that a win will bring them a fourth Premier League title in the past five years.

However, if City draw or lose, then a win for Liverpool who face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, would mean that Jurgen Klopp’s team would win their second Premier League title in three years and complete a very rare domestic treble of Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League victories.

Only Manchester City have achieved the same feat, doing so in the 2018-19 season.

Liverpool could make it an unprecedented quadruple as they are also in the Champions League Final, which will take place on the 28th May in Paris France where their opponents will be Real Madrid.

  • Manchester City v Aston Villa

Pep Guardiola’s team will be very hot favorites to clinch the Premier League title with a win at home to Aston Villa, but could the sporting fates intervene?

In the 2013/14 season, Liverpool was on course for the league title when their star midfielder Steven Gerrard slipped over in a game against Chelsea, allowing Demba Ba to score a goal at Anfield. The Reds lost that game and a subsequent draw away to Crystal Palace ended their title hopes, with Manchester City going on to claim the title.

Now, Steven Gerrard is the manager of Aston Villa and could effectively hand his former club the title by earning a win or a draw at the Etihad.

That’s not all. Villa have club captain Tyrone Mings, a self-confessed Liverpool fan as a youngster, as well as former Liverpool players Danny Ings and Philippe Coutinho in their ranks.

City have also been hit by some injuries in defence with Kyle Walker, John Stones and Ruben Dias all likely to be absent and against West Ham last week, the Hammers did create several chances on the counter in the 2-2 draw and that will be something Villa will be keen to follow the example of.

Could a shock be on the cards? It’s unlikely given City’s stellar form at home over the last few months, but anything can happen in the Premier League.

  • Liverpool v Wolves

Wolves have little to play for at the moment and that should give then a bit more

freedom to play at Anfield, where Liverpool remain unbeaten in the league this season.

Jurgen Klopp rested nine men who started the FA Cup Final win over Chelsea, in midweek at Southampton and the Reds still emerged with a 2-1 win that keeps their Premier League hopes alive.

I’d expect many of those players rested to return for the game with Wolves, though perhaps not Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah, who picked up slight injuries in the FA Cup Final and who will likely be given extra time to recover for the Champions League final next weekend.

Liverpool fans know that a win is a must and even then it may not be enough, but they will want to at least force City to land the victory in order to claim the league title.

Latest Premier League Betting Odds

A quick look at the latest odds with PointsBet Sportsbook reveals that the bookmaker has both City and Liverpool as very firm favorites to win their games at the weekend.

City are -667 to land the win over Aston Villa, while it is -650 on the draw, while Villa are +1500 to land the win at the Etihad.

Liverpool’s odds to beat Wolves are almost equally as strong with the Reds -625 with PointsBet to land the win, while the draw is +600 and Wolves are +1400 to claim a rare victory at Anfield.

So, the bookmakers seem set on a City victory and Premier League title win, but there have been some very dramatic last days in the Premier League when the title has been decided.

Premier League Last Day Drama

1994/95 – Blackburn Rovers led Manchester United going into the final day of the season with Rovers needing a draw against Liverpool at Anfield to ensure the league title, while Manchester United needed to win at West Ham and hope Blackburn lost to claim the victory.

Rovers went in front at Anfield, but Liverpool hit back to level and then took the lead very late on in the game. However, in London and despite almost incessant pressure, Manchester United could only draw at West Ham, which meant that despite the loss at Anfield, Blackburn claimed the league title.

2011/12 – The most amazing finish in Premier League history occurred when Manchester City and Manchester United were level on points going into the final day of the season, but City had a much better goal difference than United. United won 1-0 at Sunderland and news filtered through that in injury time at the Etihad, City were losing 2-1 to Queens Park Rangers. However, Edin Dzeko’s header brought City lebvel and then late in added time, Sergio Aguero smashed home a winner to hand City the title.

2018/19 – In an eerie echo of this weekend, Manchester City led Liverpool by a point heading into their final game of the season away to Brighton, while Liverpool faced Wolves at home. City won 4-1 at Brighton, despite going a goal down early to clinch the title over Liverpool who beat Wolves 2-0 at Anfield.

Tune in later today to see how the drama for the 2021/22 Premier League season unfolds.
