Champions League Quarterfinals Second Legs – A U.S. Punters Guide
Last night, we had the first two quarterfinal second leg ties played with French side Paris St Germain losing to Bayern Munich 0-1 at home, but the French team go into the semifinal draw by virtue of scoring more away goals when winning the first leg 3-2 in Germany.
In the second tie on Tuesday, Chelsea went down to a 1-0 home defeat to FC Porto, but the Londoners also progressed by virtue of their 2-0 win over the same opponents in Portugal last week.
Tonight’s two Champions League quarterfinals are the second leg of games played last week on Tuesday and each of the ties is delicately poised.
Borussia Dortmund (1) v (2) Manchester City
In the first, German side Borussia Dortmund are 2-1 down from the first leg against Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola’s City team the favorites to win the competition.
City are currently running away with the Premier League in England, but they have lost out in the quarterfinals of this competition in each of the last couple of years. Dortmund are well off the pace in the German Bundesliga but a solid display in the first leg has given them a real chance in the second.
The German side can count on U.S. international Gio Reyna amongst their number for the game and he could start the game alongside the fearsome Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, English winger Jaden Sancho and Germany’s Marco Reus.
For Manchester City, the likes of Kevin De Bruyne of Belgium, England’s Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling, Brazil’s Gabriel de Jesus and Portugal’s Ruben Dias are amongst the players to keep a close eye on.
This should be a close game but if you are going to back a team for a parlay bet here, then my advice would be to back Manchester City as they have been by far the most consistent of the two teams this season and defensively, they are a lot more solid compared to their German opponents.
Liverpool (1) v (3) Real Madrid
The second game tonight features two teams that have global appeal including within the United States. Real Madrid hold a 3-1 lead from the first leg in Spain over Liverpool. These are two of the most decorated teams in this tournament’s history, Real winning it a record 11 times, while Liverpool have managed six wins, their last coming back in 2018.
Both teams are star studded with Real having the likes of Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard, Vinicius Junior, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric within their squad, although Hazard along with Sergio Ramos and Rafael Varane is unlikely to play due to injury or illness.
Liverpool, owned by Boston Red Sox owners Fenway Sports Group, can boast an equally talented squad with the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Gini Wijnaldum all likely to feature for the Reds.
Liverpool need to win the game 2-0 or better in order to progress and that looks a tall order for the Reds, especially with them missing their three first-choice central defenders (Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip).
However, the Reds were 3-0 down to Barcelona in the semifinals of this competition back in 2018, but managed to beat the Catalan side 4-0 at Anfield to go into the final, where they would then beat Spurs 2-0 to lift the trophy.
A year later though and a team from Madrid put them out of the competition with a win at Anfield, Atletico winning 3-2 after extra time to knock out the then holders 4-2 on aggregate.
I have a sneaky feeling the same may happen again here as although I would suggest Liverpool are the team to back to win, I don’t think they will win by enough to go through and Real will progress into the semifinals.
