Where Is The Early Betting Money Going For Super Bowl LV?

On Sunday February 7, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will become the first team to play a SuperDraftKings Super Bowl DFS Bowl at home field. Their opponents at Raymond James Stadium, will be the Kansas City Chiefs, the current Lombardi Trophy holders.

The game is packed with so many intriguing subplots. Will the GOAT Tom Brady claim his seventh Super Bowl win in his 10th appearance? Or will the baby-GOAT Patrick Mahomes lead the Chiefs to a second successive Superbowl at the tender age of just 25?

Which of the high-powered offenses will come out on top? Or will the pass rush of the defenses of both teams be the difference makers? Will the experience of Tampa Bay be too much for the explosive youth and energy of the Chiefs?

Unsurprisingly, interest in the game is huge already, with plenty of money being bet with bookmakers like DraftKings Sportsbook over a week before the game is due to start. However where is that money going?

Let’s take a look at the stats provided by DraftKings Sports on the early betting for Super Bowl LV to find out.

Super Bowl LV – Early Betting Trends

At the moment, DraftKings, along with most other bookmakers have the defending champions, the Kansas City Chiefs as the -3 favourite to win Super Bowl LV.

In truth, the only reason the Chiefs are that long, is because they are facing Tom Brady, in a Super Bowl, at his team’s home stadium. If this were at a neutral venue against a regular quarterback, then I think the Chiefs would be at -7.5 or even greater.

DraftKings data shows that it is not just the sportsbooks that feel the Chiefs are the pick when it comes to the point spread market. 81% of the money bet on that market early on in this past week went on Andy Reid’s team and 77% of the bets placed also backed the Chiefs.

That’s staggering when you consider that the Chiefs are up against the following:

  • A man who is the greatest quarterback of all time.
  • Who also owns six Super Bowl rings from nine previous appearances in the big game.
  • Has won more than double the amount of post season games compared to any other player.
  • Has his team playing at home.
  • A team that comes into the game having won three tough road games to reach the Super Bowl.

Fans also seem to expect this to be a high-scoring Superbowl, with the Over 56.0 points market attracting 83% of the money bet and 83% of the bets made on that particular market.

That is an entirely logical step given the fact that the game will be played in much balmier conditions than the two Conference Championship games. Furthermore, both offenses will likely thrive in these warmer climes.

A Twist In The Tail For Moneyline Bets?

So it seems all the money seems to be going on the Chiefs doesn’t it? Well, this is where the moneyline market throws us a curveball. The Chiefs were -162 to win the game, with the Bucs +143 in the early betting.

At those odds, it was the Bucs that attracted the most number of bets (56%). Although it should be notes that the Chiefs still attracted more dollars backing them in this market (55%).

To me that sounds like a lot of people are backing the Bucs to land win with smaller value bets, but the bigger dollar amounts are still being bet on the Chiefs.

Super Bowl LV – Other Markets Available at DraftKings Sportsbook

That trend does seem to be borne out by the very latest odds on the game. DraftKings Sportsbook has shortened the odds on the Chiefs slightly to -167 and increased the odds on the Bucs to +145. Indicative of more money being bet on the Chiefs in the early markets.

There are now available a number of other great bets for Super Bowl LV including the following:

  • Player Bet to Score the First or Last Touchdown, or to score any time in the game.
  • Player Bet to Score 2+ or 3+ Touchdowns
  • QB Bet on Scoring Over/Under 1.5 or 2.5 Touchdowns
  • Super Bowl MVP Betting

There are also many more betting options across several different categories, covering other offensive roles, the defense and special teams play in the game.
