Did The Rams Try To Stop 49ers Fans From Buying Tickets To The NFC Championship Game?

After a stunning weekend of Divisional Playoff games, the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers were the two teams to progress into the NFC Championship game after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers respectively.

However, on Saturday Night and throughout Sunday, when fans wanting to purchase tickets to the game at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles logged in to the Rams Ticketmaster service, they found a rather surprising warning.

The warning stated that

“Public sales to the game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA will be restricted to residents of the Greater Los Angeles region. Residency will be based on credit card billing address at checkout. Orders by residents outside of the Greater Los Angeles region will be canceled without notice and refunds given.”

So, what many are wondering now, is whether the Rams ownership actively sought to prevent San Francisco 49ers fans from purchasing tickets for the game, even before the Rams themselves had confirmed their participation in it.

24-Hour Head Start

With the 49ers playing their Divisional Playoff game against Green Bay on Saturday evening, that meant that 49ers fans already knew that their team would be on the road for the Conference Championship game, either in Tampa, or in L.A.

It is abundantly clear therefore that for 49ers fans, the more appealing game would be the one in L.A., which is a journey of around six hours in a car, as opposed to a cross-country trek to the Sunshine State.

One would therefore assume that 49ers fans seeking to grab a ticket to the game would have opted to purchase tickets for the potential matchup at SoFi Stadium, as logistically it is a much easier game to get to.

It seems that the top brass at the Rams have thought that this would be the case too, given the restrictions that were placed on ticket sales over the weekend.

This may well have been a reaction to the amount of support that the 49ers brought with them to the SoFi Stadium in the regular season, which Rams staff seem to feel played a role in their eventual defeat in that game.

It hasn’t helped that the Rams have spent 20 years away from L.A, before returning back to the state only to find many supporters had switched allegiances from them to other teams, many picking the 49ers.

49ers Fan Furore

Unsurprisingly, 49ers fans did not take kindly to their ability on attending the game being decided by the geography of their residence and it seems from Twitter, that many fans complained about the situation over the weekend.

That’s because as of Monday morning, the restrictions that had been in place were removed without any warning or explanation from the Ticketmaster account.

Instead, the only advice given to fans was related to Covid-19 and vaccination status.

However, with no restrictions now on tickets, it is likely that the 49ers invasion of Los Angeles will begin again leading up to next week’s game.

On The Field Issues

In truth, it is a somewhat baffling stance by the Rams, if indeed those restrictions were in place to preserve spaces for home fans.

Given that they have not beaten the 49ers in any of their last six games, and have lost 10 of the last 13 to their divisional rivals, the Rams coaching team and players have more than enough on their plate to deal with a hot 49ers team that have found their best form of the season at just the right time.

Furthermore, as we have seen in the playoffs, having the majority of the crowd behind you in the playoffs is no guarantee of a win. Three of the four home teams, including both top seeds and last year’s Super Bowl Champions, lost in the Divisional Round last week.

The Rams remain the favorites to win the game, but the spread has shifted from -3.5 to -3.0 with plenty of money for the 49ers with PointsBet Sportsbook, likely due to their impressive record over the Rams over the years.

One thing is sure, this additional sidestory will add fuel to the fire for this weekend’s epic NFC Conference Championship game!
