FanDuel Removing the Kicker From NFL Contests This Season

FanDuel removes the kicker position from its classic NFl contests for the 2018-2019 season.

FanDuel gets rid of the kicker position

Kickers hoping to be appreciated this NFL season aren’t going to get any love from FanDuel this season. The DFS site announced that beginning with the 2018-2019 NFL season, the kicker position would be removed, which puts the site in line with DraftKings, which has not included a kicker position, at least in recent memory.

In place of a kicker position, FanDuel is adding a flex position, which FanDuel users can fill with their choice of a wide receiver, running back or tight end.

FanDuel announced the news with a montage of player comments asking for the change. Yes, this change will surely not disappoint many people that play DFS

Why the hate for kickers?

In daily fantasy sports — as well as fantasy sports in general — the kicker position has long been a frustration of people who play the game. Some even wonder if they deserve to be in the game at all.

The position is not an exciting position, not by any stretch of the imagination. They aren’t even real football players, right? But what makes the kicker position so infuriating is that their performances are hard to predict. Filling the roster spot is more or less random, making the position much more difficult to draft versus other positions.

And really, in terms of an EV standpoint, there really isn’t a lot of difference between the best and worst kicker in a given week.

Yeah, I’m sorry to say that 27 points you picked up from that kicker was not skill, but just or more or less dumb luck. Sure, it’s fun being on the positive end of a situation where your kicker single-handedly wins you the game, but is that really fantasy football?

Not like this

More and more fantasy players are saying no to this question, and that is why FanDuel is doing the right thing and getting rid of the kicker. I don’t love that the the move further minimizes the differences between FanDuel and DraftKings when it comes with their NFL contests, but they surely can find a better distinction than holding on to the kicker position. For now, good job FanDuel.
