Could Drew Brees Follow Tom Brady And Un-Retire From The NFL?

Earlier this year, Tom Brady caused a sensation when he retired from the NFL, only to reverse that decision 60 days later and promise to return for at least one more season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Now the man whose records Tom Brady surpassed in a number of categories over the last few years, may be on the verge of making an even more spectacular, and unexpected return to the NFL.

After retiring in 2020, Drew Brees spent his first season out of the NFL calling plays for NBC and proved to be a popular and well-liked analyst with some, not so popular with others.

However, a number of Tweets over the weekend have raised the possibility that rather than move on to work with another TV channel, Brees could well be tempted out of retirement for another shot at being an NFL quarterback.

New York Post Reveals No Brees Commentaries At NBC

At the weekend, the New York Post revealed that Drew Brees would not be returning to NBC after a year as their main NFL analyst.

Then, not too long after that announcement, Brees tweeted on his personal Twitter account:

“Man…signing @juice_landry and @mathieu_era makes me want to come back and play again!!! Great additions…leaders and players!”

The Saints had moved to sign Jarvis Landry at wide receiver to go with current top WR talent Michael Thomas, as well as their top pick from the 2022 NFL Draft, Chris Olave.

They had also added safety Tyrann Mathieu to their much-admired defense as the former Chiefs star returned to New Orleans after spending most of his career away from his home city.

The Saints had already moved to re-sign QB Jameis Winston for another season after his promising start with the Saints last year was cut short by a season-ending injury, which led to a struggling season for the Saints who missed out on the playoffs.

That announcement, together with the news that Brees would not be back at NBC, led to many fans and media outlets putting two and two together and assuming that Brees was set for a sensational return to the Saints.

Clarification Of Sorts

However, Brees moved quickly to clarify his future…by not actually clarifying his future in another post just a short time after his first Tweet about the talent the Saints amassed over the off-season.

“Despite speculation from media about my future this fall, I’m currently undecided.” Tweeted Brees.

“I may work for NBC, I may play football again, I may focus on business and philanthropy, I may train for the pickleball tour, senior golf tour, coach my kids or all of the above. I’ll let you know.”

Brees, who is also am ambassador for PointsBet Sportsbook, has made it clear that he is undecided as to his future, although in another recent Tweet, he revealed that he had successfully undergone shoulder surgery and also mentioned taking part in the Pickleball tour, as he has in the more recent Tweet above.

Debate On Social Media

The news story has generated a back and forth on social media between Saints fans who would love to see Brees back, especially on a team loaded with talent on offense and a stellar defense and those who think that this is now Jameis Winston’s team and that going back to Brees would be a mistake.

It is therefore going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Could Brees make a comeback? If so where would he play? There’s no guarantee the Saints would be the first team making a call to him as there are plenty of other QB-needy teams.

And until such a time as this issue is clarified, the debate is likely to continue on social media for quite some time.

However, the prospect of Brady v Brees twice a year for dominance in the NFC South does have huge appeal.
