Nikola Jokic (-360) may be the favourite with DraftKings Sportsbook to win the MVP award in the NBA this year, but the 76ers star Joel Embiid (second favourite at +340) is making a stirring case to win the award himself.
Embiid produced another stellar performance last night for the Philadelphia 76ers as they went down 116-113 to the Phoenix Suns.
Embiid finished with 38 points and 17 rebounds, but it was his last second full court heave that almost sent the game into overtime that will live long in the memory.
With the Suns at the free throw line, Chris Paul took aim at the shot that would confirm the Suns win, but the ball hit the rim. With barely a second remaining, Embiid claimed the rebound and launched a shot from inside the paint.
The ball sailed through the air as time expired, hit the backboard and seemed destined for a miracle game-tying 3-pointer, but somehow the ball hit the rim and bounced back out.

Speaking after the game, Embiid commented:
“When I threw it, it looked good.”

Positives Despite Loss
Despite suffering their second loss to the Suns this season, the 76ers will take heart
that their depleted team took one of their playoff rivals down to the wire.
Missing Ben Simmons, Seth Curry and Tobias Harris, the 76ers always looked up against it against the Suns, who lie second in the Western Conference.
The 76ers (39-19) held onto top spot despite their second defeat in a row but they will need to be ready for this weekend’s double-header against the third-placed team in the Eastern Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks (35-22).
There is speculation that Harris, Curry and Simmons were rested tactfully for the Suns game, with the double header against the Bucks coming up at the weekend, with the 76ers needing to win both games to have the best head to head against the Bucks (who beat them earlier in the season).
For Phoenix it was another good result and it continues their excellent run of form. Devin Booker struggled early on in the game, but Chris Paul stepped up to the mark with 28 points and 8 assists.
The Suns (42-16) have the second-best record in the NBA behind the Utah Jazz (44-15) and they have won six of their last seven games.
The Form Team In The NBA
In other NBA News, the form team in the NBA at the moment are the New York Knicks (33-27) who have emerged from a cluster of teams in the middle the Eastern Conference table to move into fourth place ahead of the Hawks, Celtic and Heat.
Eight wins in a row have followed two narrow defeats to the Nets and Celtics and the Knicks have also knocked over the Lakers during that run. Last night their 137-127 overtime win over the Atlanta Hawks (32-27) was built on a fine performance by Julius Randle who netted 40 points and 11 rebounds in a key win.
Other notable results saw the Charlotte Raptors better the Brooklyn Nets 114-103, while the Utah Jazz picked up another win with a comfortable 112-89 victory over the struggling Houston Rockets. Playoff chasing LA Clippers also picked up a good win by besting the Memphis Grizzlies 117-105.
