DraftKings NBA game styles
Daily fantasy sports has broadened its scope over the last few years with modified structures, commonly referred to as “styles” on DFS sites. DraftKings is starting the 2018-2019 NBA season with three main game styles: Classic, Showdown Captain Mode and Tiers.
Classic: If you are confused with what type of DFS to play, chances are Classic is what you seek. For many years, Classic contests were the only way to play daily fantasy sports so they are generally what most people think of when they think of DFS.
Classic NBA contests at DraftKings utilize an 8-player lineup with a $50,000 salary cap. Rosters consist of the following: 1 PG, 1 SG, 1 SF, 1 PF, 1 C, 1 F, and a Utility position.
Captain Mode contests are a newer form of daily fantasy sports where DraftKings users create a lineup from one game. DFS sites used to avoid offering these contests due to regulations but now that sports betting is opening up in the United States, sites like DraftKings feel much more comfortable offering them.
In DraftKings Captain Mode NBA contests, you’ll select 1 Captain position and five Utility positions. Make sure your Captain is well thought out because the position will earn 1.5 the normal rate of points. Other than the higher rate of captain points, these games score exactly the same as Classic contests.
Tiers, another new form of daily fantasy sports, is quite different than the daily fantasy sports you may be used to. Instead of drafting players using a salary cap, in Tiers contests, you select players from within a tier, which generally consists of similarly valued played.
At DraftKings NBA Tiers contests, you will usually draft players from six different tiers, although the number of tiers can vary based on the game set.
DraftKings NBA contests are divided into eight unique tabs: Featured, Beginner, Casual, Tournaments, Head to Head, 50/50s and Double Ups, Multipliers, and Satellites and Qualifiers.
Beginner contests are available to DraftKings users who have not played 50 contests in a sport whereas DraftKings Casual contests are not available to players that have been labeled as “experienced,” which is a player that has played at least 500 contests or won at least $1,000 three times.
Each of the eight types of contests is available for the three NBA styles available on DraftKings.
