The MLB World Series Winner Betting Market Is Tightening

There is still plenty of the MLB regular season left to play before the final set of fixtures on October 3rd, but in what has been an unusual season in many ways, there has been a significant impact in the betting on the MLB World Series Winner outright market.

In this article, all betting odds described are taken from BetMGM Sportsbook, and the odds shown were correct at the time of writing (Mon 26th July 2021).

So what have been some of the key events that have affected these odds? Which teams have seen their odds slashed by the bookmakers and which teams have drifted in the betting?

Current Betting – MLB World Series Winner With BetMGM

As you can see from the odds, the LA Dodgers (61-40) remain the favorites to win the World Series at +375. However there has been plenty of money for the Houston Astros (61-39) who are now the clear second favorites at +475.

The Chicago White Sox (59-40) are the third favorites at odds of +700 with the San Diego Padres (58-44) and New York Mets (52-44) rated as +900 chances.

Somewhat unusually, the team with the best record in the MLB at the moment, the San Francisco Giants (who top the NL West with a 62-37 record ahead of both the Dodgers and Padres) are rated as +1200 chances to win, just slightly better than the Tampa Bay Rays, the defending World Series Champions, who are +1300.

Fans in Milwaukee will be hoping the Brewers (+1200) can follow the Bucks in landing a major national championship as they sit atop the NL Central ahead of the Reds, Cardinals and Cubs.

The Boston Red Sox top the AL East and they are +1100 to land a title.

Who Is In Form And Who Isn’t?

Incredibly, there is just one team in the National League that has a record better than 0.500 over their last ten games and that is the St. Louis Cardinals (6-4). Ten of the 15 teams in the NL have a 5-5 record over that period, with the worst record being the 3-7 by the Washington Nationals.

That competitiveness is echoed in the win percentage for each team with only four teams having a win percentage of .560 or better. The Giants (.626), Dodgers (.604), Brewers (.580) and Padres (.569).

Given how competitive things are in the National League, it is going to be a crucial final couple of months of the season that will decide which five teams makes it into the playoffs, which get underway on October 5th with the first of the Wild-Card games.

Things are perhaps a little more defined in the American League, where the Texas Rangers are comfortably the least consistent team at the moment, having lost all of their last ten. That run has seen the Baltimore Orioles close in on avoiding the tag of being the worst team in the AL this season.

Three teams have won seven of their last ten games, including the Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros. Four other teams have a 6-4 record over the last ten, the Red Sox, Orioles, Royals and Mariners.

Who To Back For The World Series?

So if you are thinking of having a bet on the World Series right now, who would be the team to back? Sure the Dodgers have the history and a team packed with talent, but with the Tampa Bay Rays coming into form once again, they know what it takes to win the World Series having done so last season.

They are both interesting options but for me, I think the best option at the moment seem to be the San Diego Padres who snatched up Adam Frazier on a trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates just a few hours ago and who look strong heading into the last couple of months of the season.
