Ryder Cup Preview And Best Betting Tips From BetRivers Sportsbook

After being postponed last year, the 2020 Ryder Cup will take place this week at the famous Whistling Straits Golf Club in Wisconsin. The incredibly strong United States team will feature 12 players all ranked no higher than 21st in the golf rankings, attempting to win back the trophy that Team Europe won in 2018 in France.

This almost unique event in golf is one of the most emotional and demanding that a top player will play in and the tournament has seen some unlikely heroes over the years and there will be new Ryder Cup heroes crowned in this coming week of action too.

Let’s now preview the event by taking a look at the two teams competing, before we then have a look at some of the best betting available on the event with BetRivers Sportsbook.

Ryder Cup Teams

Team USA

  • Captain – Steve Stricker
  • Vice Captains – Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson, Davis Love III, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples
  • Players – Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Harris English, Daniel Berger, Scottie Scheffler.

The United States team is a relatively young one with 37-year-old Dustin Johnson, veteran of four Ryder Cup tournaments, their most experienced player by far. Six of the team will be playing as Ryder Cup Rookies.

However, despite the lack of Ryder Cup experience, the team also has eight of the world’s top ten in the Golf Rankings in their team, and no player is ranked below 21st in the world in the team of 12.

Team Europe

  • Captain – Padraig Harrington
  • Vice Captains – Robert Karlsson, Henrik Stenson, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer
  • Players – Jon Rahm (Esp), Tommy Fleetwood (Eng), Tyrell Hatton (Eng), Bernd Wiesberger (Aut), Rory McIlroy (N.Ire), Viktor Hovland (Nor), Paul Casey (Eng), Matthew Fitzpatrick (Eng), Lee Westwood (Eng), Shane Lowry (Ire), Sergio Garcia (Esp), Ian Poulter (Eng)

The European team is much more experienced than the American team with four players over the age of 40 and five players that have played in four or more Ryder Cup tournaments. They are also the holders of the trophy after their win in France in 2018.

Team Europe has just one player ranked inside the World’s Top Ten (Jon Rahm) and four of the team are ranked in the World’s top 20 (Rahm, plus Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland and Tyrell Hatton).  Their lowest ranked competitor is 63rd world ranked Bernd Wiesberger of Austria.

Wiesberger of Austria and Hovland of Norway are the first players from their country to represent Europe at the Ryder Cup.

How Will The Ryder Cup Be Contested?

The Ryder Cup is contested across three days of intense action. The first two days, which are Friday and Saturday this coming week see four morning foursomes, which are then followed by four afternoon fourball (betterball) matches.

There are eight points available across both Friday and Saturday before we head to the final day of action on Sunday when all 12 players in each team will play their individual match with one point available in each game for the winner.

The first team to reach 14.5 points out of the 28 available will win the Ryder Cup, however in the event of a tie at 14-14, Team Europe will retain the trophy as holders.

Best Ryder Cup Bets With BetRivers Sportsbook

BetRivers currently have Team USA as the -186 favorites to win the event ahead of Europe who are +188, with the tie +1200.

That’s not surprising given that Team USA are at home and do seem to have a much stronger squad in terms of World Rankings than the European team. There has also only been one tie since the two teams started competing in 1979 against each other, which does make that option the longer odds of the three.

It is hard to back against Team USA here, given the depth and quality of the team but there have been times when even a strong United States team has struggled to gel, however given home support, I feel Team USA are the pick for this market.

For better value odds, the markets on the top European and United States team points scorer is a good value one with Jordan Spieth at +750 looking a great value bet to me for US fans, while Tommy Fleetwood at +700 is another worth a look for those seeking a bet on the European team.

It should be a cracking sporting spectacle to enjoy from Friday onwards and as always, you can be assured that the Ryder Cup will bring plenty of drama, excitement and emotion for sports fans to enjoy this weekend.
