FanDuel Closes UK Daily Fantasy Sports Site

FanDuel pulls the plug on their UK-facing site to focus more on the United States.

FanDuel to Close UK facing Site Immediately

After nearly a year in the UK market, FanDuel has abruptly announced — at least temporarily — to close their UK-facing brand. The top DFS site stated that they are leaving the UK so that the DFS site can focus on the main FanDuel website, which primarily services American players. UK players with money still in their account will have funds credited back to their most recently bank used bank card.

FanDuel UK Informs Players of Immediate Closing

UK FanDuel daily fantasy sports players received emails on Friday informed players of the decision. A short message is also listed on the FanDuel UK website. The announcement comes two weeks prior to the start of the English Premier League, which is by far the most popular sport and league in the UK. Although FanDuel is making a big move by leaving the UK market, they have left open the option to return to UK. “We hope to be back in the future, bringing you more of the games you love.”

FanDuel originally entered the UK market back in the middle of 2016 after receiving a license from the UK Gambling Commission. DraftKings had proceeded FanDuel while Yahoo’s UK daily fantasy sports website was introduced to the market late last year. Both companies continue to service the UK. DraftKings CEO Jason Robins even recently stated that the company, which also expanded to Germany, has been pleased with the performance in the UK.

With sports betting ubiquitous in the country, gaining a foothold in the daily fantasy sports market has unsurprisingly proven to be difficult. Players had won just £1 million at FanDuel UK during its first year of operations.

FanDuel’s Future in Daily Fantasy Sports

By leaving the UK, FanDuel will now be able to focus exclusively on the United States market. In the wake of the failed merger with DraftKings, the company will continue to aggressively compete with long time rival DraftKings.

As a whole, the closing of FanDuel UK should have little impact on US players or the company as a whole. FanDuel generated very little with their UK product, and with the NFL season is just over a month away FanDuel undoubtedly wants to take away some market share away from competitors. There is some speculation that FanDuel may be a bit tight on cash after the merger fell through. However, CEO Nigel Eccels believes that 2018 might be the first profitable year for the company.

If you were a UK player who still had a balance at FanDuel UK, they have indicated that funds will be transferred back to the most recently used bank card. If you have not received information from FanDuel, be sure to contact them via customer support at [email protected]
