Hit And Run: Tony Tran Wins WPT Rolling Thunder; Illinois And Michigan Roll Out Sports Betting

Tony Tran wins nearly $280k in second WPT win

On Tuesday night, Tony Tran came out on top of the 2020 World Poker Tour Rolling Thunder Main Event. In his path to the prize, Tran defeated a field of 250 entries to win the title as well as a first-place prize of $279,270.

The victory was his second WPT title, having previously won the 2018 WPT bestbet Bounty Scramble. Tran has now won over $1 million in his live tournament poker career, according to the Hendon Mob.

Quick hitters

– Momentum continues for sports betting in the United States. This week Illinois and Michigan sports betting is set to launch with retail sports betting. Online sports betting will go live in Michigan during 2021 while Illinois residents will have to wait another 18 months. The Maryland Senate overwhelmingly passed a sportsbetting bill 47-0 on Tuesday and now heads to the Maryland House.

Galfond Challenge Update: There was no action on Wednesday due to a scheduled day off. Phil Galfond and Venividi will pick things up again on Thursday beginning at 11 AM ET. – In the latest poker news on the coronavirus, 888 LIVE has canceled the LIVE Bucharest series that was set to be held from March 23rd to March 29th. The WPTDeepStack Schedule has also been adjusted.

Speaking of the coronavirus, Daniel Negreanu has commented by saying that that the federal government should “let online poker be legal” saying that it would be something for people to do while they are at their homes.

And there is always a bet involved. Matt Glanz is offering to get the coronavirus for $250k. Any takers?

– The biggest live tournament series running right now is partypoker LIVE Millions Sochi. The latest event to crown a winner was the $50,000 Short Deck, which was won by Wai Kin Yong, after he outlasted 50 entries including Phil Ivey heads-up to win the $800,000 first-place prize. Ivey won $525k for finishing in second-place finish at a final table that included Sam Greenwood, Cary Katz, Seth Davis and Paul Phua, among others.
