Bracelet chasing. Yoga and meditation. Marathon live poker sessions in Asia featuring “special tea.”
Casino pit game avoidance. Horribad crypto business experiences.
High stakes skins matches with Dnegs, Doyle Brunson, Michael Jordan, and the late Mike Sexton.
Ten-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Ivey joined DAT Poker Podcast hosts Daniel Negreanu, Terrence Chan, and Adam Schwartz this weekend to relive tales of poker yesteryear as the former “world’s greatest” looks forward to competing in more high profile events.
7 Things We Learned from Phil Ivey Interview
Following are seven revelations that Phil Ivey shared during his recent DAT Poker Podcast appearance.
Phil Ivey makes special guest appearance on DAT Poker Podcast, Episode #100 (May 2021)
(#1) Marathon poker sessions in Macau require “special tea?” (24:40)
Although Phil Ivey hasn’t traveled to Macau in over a year (due to social gathering restrictions and quarantine mandates), he recalls that players in Macau had an incredible amount of stamina that allowed them to play “three to four days at a time.”
Phil says this stamina was aided by a “special tea” that pro players consumed at the time.
(#2) Teenager “Jerome Graham” commuted from North Jersey to Atlantic City in the 1990s (25:57)
Once upon a time, an adolescent who was known by casino personnel as No Home Jerome would catch the bus from North Jersey to Atlantic City to grind live poker games at the Taj Mahal.
Phil even slept on the beach when the games were too good to leave in time to catch the bus ride back.
(#3) WSOP bracelet chase doesn’t impact Phil Ivey’s legacy (36:40)
Phil Ivey would be “stoked” to compete in more World Series of Poker bracelet events once land-based activities return to normal.
However, the former poker jet-setter doesn’t feel that his legacy will be impacted if he fails to capture an elusive 11th bracelet.
Phil later admits that he “made some mistakes” during his 2009 WSOP Main Event final table appearance, but also says that it was a “hell of an experience.”
(#4) Phil Ivey as an “up and comer” with Doyle Brunson and Chip Reese (47:53)
Phil Ivey began competing in sanctioned events at a time when poker pros Doyle Brunson and Chip Reese were among the most dominating forces on the scene.
Phil admits that he and Doyle have jousted nuermous times at the tables (and on the golf course too), but also confides that the two have a very close relationship away from the tables.
Phil Ivey says the loss of Chip Reese (2007) was a significant blow to poker.
(#5) Millionaire prop bet loss on the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX (50:33)
There’s a rumor that Phil Ivey’s 2015 Aussie Millions win for $2.2 million was just enough to offset his prop bet loss on the Seahawks and Russel Wilson in Super Bowl XLIX.
That rumor remains unconfirmed.
(#6) Michael Jordan is a “special human being” — even on the golf course (1:00:53)
Phil Ivey has played golf with both Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan, but is quick to point out that Michael Jordan is a “special human being” who is an extremely fierce competitor on the course.
Phil’s favorite golf foursome is Daniel Negreanu, himself, Doyle Brunson, and the late Mike Sexton.
(#7) Still no word on who will play Phil Ivey in the upcoming movie (1:00:53)
Film producers have hinted privately at who might play the role of Phil Ivey in the upcoming Baccarat Queen movie, but Phil hasn’t heard any definite word either way.
