WSOP Hall of Fame: Norman Chad, Isai Scheinberg Nominees

Poker Hall of Fame Nominee Norman Chad Says Rival Candidate Isai Scheinberg “Cheated the System”

Veteran sports columnist and World Series of Poker commentator Norman Chad took to Twitter Monday to call out fellow 2020 Poker Hall of Fame finalist Isai Scheinberg — labeling the former PokerStars owner as an “anomaly” who “lined his pockets with poker gold” and “cheated the system” by circumventing U.S. money laundering laws.

Scheinberg, who led PokerStars’ evolution into the world’s largest poker site as co-owner from 2001-2015, was sentenced to time served (along with a $30,000 fine) by the U.S. Department of Justice in September 2020 for operating an unlawful internet gambling business.

Chad has become a mainstay on #PokerTwitter since posting sharp criticism of unlimited poker tournament re-entries, and joins a list of ten Poker Hall of Fame finalists alongside WSOP announcing partner Lon McEachern.

The lone selection (or duo if Chad & McEachern are enshrined as a team) will be announced in conjunction with the 2020 World Series of Poker Main Event final table, set to take place on December 28th at the Rio All Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Only living members of the Poker Hall of Fame are eligible to vote.

“Kid Poker” Daniel Negreanu Defends Scheinberg

Norman Chad’s view on Scheinberg’s lack of merit-based eligibility for the Poker Hall of Fame has been echoed by former live tournament reporter and Catena Media New Markets Director Jessica Welman, who likewise admonished Scheinberg’s role while serving as PokerStars’ chief executive.

However, former PokerStars sponsored pro and longtime Scheinberg acquaintance Daniel Negreanu adamantly defended his former boss during a December 6th appearance on DAT Poker Podcast, calling Welman’s opinion “the worst take ever.” (VIDEO CUED 29:55-31:59)

“If the legislators think {legalizing online poker} makes financial sense for them — like sports betting — they will do it. Period.” -Daniel Negreanu, DAT Poker Podcast Episode #89 – Dec 6, 2020

Poker Community Dinosaurs Stick Up For Isai Scheinberg’s Contributions

Several established members of the poker forum community have posted their thoughts while keeping up with the corresponding thread on the TwoPlusTwo News, Views, and Gossip board.

DISCUSS NOW: Should Isai Scheinberg be ineligible for Poker Hall of Fame? (December 2020)

“There’s no question that Isai deserves to be in there. He did a lot to grow poker and the players should be forever grateful. Also, from a personal standpoint, I and 2+2 had a number of direct dealings with him and he was top notch in every way, and poker needs him back.” Mason Malmuth, Two Plus Two Publishing

“I think that literally 100% of the people who know Isai also know that he cared deeply about the game of poker.” Michael Josem, Former PokerStars Head of Public Relations

“Clearly Mr. Chad has ZERO understanding of the significant role Mr. Scheinberg played in providing a place for literally millions of players to play poker online, and financially supporting and publicizing Chad’s meal ticket.” David Gzesh, True Poker founder and iGaming Attorney

“He made Stars into the biggest site by making it a quality site. He realized that making it a good environment for regs would make it successful. He didn’t do things for short term profit which damage the site like most sites do now.” -deuceblocker, NVG forum ‘old hand’

Who Will Earn 2020 Poker Hall of Fame Enshrinement?

With a total of ten poker players and builders up for consideration, it is a foregone conclusion that there will be several very worthy candidates who will inevitably be snubbed.

Find out Monday, December 28th, who will become the next Poker Hall of Fame inductee(s).
