With the 1,400 hand session on Friday and 21,306 hands played, Daniel Negreanu and Doug Polk have their sights set on finishing their heads-up challenge match this week with Polk up by $736,804.09 heading into Monday’s session.
In order to finish the match this week, they needed to play nearly 1200 hands per day, and on Monday they went a long way towards that goal — and then some.
Playing an epic session of 2,000 hands over the course of 7 hours on Monday, the pair now only need to play 1,800 more hands to complete the challenge. Doug Polk started the session with a lead of over $200k, before Negreanu clawed his way back to even.
But it was short lived, as Daniel Negreanu struggled during the last 10 minutes, and Polk finished up the match by adding another $207k to his lead and is now up by a comfortable margin of $942k heading into the home stretch.
In a post-game interview, Negreanu recognized the reality of his huge deficit by calling the match “over.” Another sign that the fat lady has sung — poker betting site PokerShares moved the Negreanu Vs Polk match market off the board even before Monday’s session.

On Monday, Joey Ingram welcomed Jeff Platt to the broadcast for the epic session. Platt has been hosting Daniel Negreanu’s home team coverage from the GG Poker YouTube channel throughout the match.
If you couldn’t sit through the entire session live, you can watch a replay below:
Ingram will see the match through the end with with Bill Perkins joining the stream on Wednesday and Phil Galfond on Friday, if they don’t finish early.
Despite losing big on Monday, Negreanu was relatively happy with his play. “I didn’t feel outmatched and outplayed. I felt like I was really clicking and doing well.”
He also mentioned again that luck was not on his side for the session, which has been a recurrent theme throughout the challenge.
“That’s the one thing I would take away from this 24,000 hands. If I would have hit more hands in big spots, hitting rivers and hitting draws, it would looked like a very different match. That’s the unfortunate part, because obviously this match is over.”
Why so many hands on the session. ” I think we are both looking forward to this being over.”
During the Doug Polk post-game, Mike Brady presented Polk with a hypothetical. “Would you rather play a rematch against Negreanu or play the WSOP Main Event every year until you are 65.”
Polk: “I think I would play Daniel again.”
