Poker World Mourns The Loss Of Mike Sexton

The poker world lost a giant on Sunday when Mike Sexton passed away at the age of 72. Nicknamed “The Ambassador of Poker,” Mike Sexton was perhaps one of the most well-known people in poker, notably through his role as a host and face of the World Poker Tour, which he hosted from 2002 to 2017.

It was his involvement with WPT that helped cement Sexton’s already strong legacy in the poker world when he became a member of the Poker Hall of Fame in 2009. Most recently, Sexton was the Chairman of partypoker, a poker site he helped found just before online poker’s early years (he later joked about selling his share in the company too early, “losing” $500 million). Sexton filled the Chairman role from 2017 until his death.

But in addition to being a heavyweight in the industry, Sexton was also a well-respected poker player in his own right, recording $6.7 million in lifetime tournament winnings according to The Hendon Mob.

Career highlights include a World Series of Poker bracelet in the 1989 $1,500 Seven Card Stud Split event along with 46 cashes in World Series of Poker events. In 2006, Sexton won the World Series of Poker 2006 Tournament of Champions for $1 million.

Although he was a commentator for the WPT, he also participated in many of the tour’s event, cashing 17 times for over $1 million in earnings including four final tables and a victory at the 2016 WPT Montreal in 2016.

Tributes pour in from poker world

Earlier this month longtime friend Linda Johnson informed her followers that Sexton had been suffering from cancer, which led to an outpouring of support and well wishes from the poker community.

Since Mike’s passing, Twitter has been flooded with praise not only of Mike Sexton the poker personality but of Mike Sexton the person.
