Indiana was among the first wave of states — and first from the Midwest — to regulate online sports betting when Governor Eric Holcomb signed a bill in May 2019, which was followed by the launch of retail sports betting in September of 2019 and online sportsbooks quickly following suit in October.
Since launching, there has been an influx of nearly a dozen online sportsbooks having come to the state with more on the way. Virtually every casino in Indiana has partnered with an established online sportsbook, which includes household names such as DraftKings, FanDuel, William Hill and Caesars.
Its proximity to major cities — including Chicago — just outside Indiana could help online gambling spread to other nearby states and ultimately bring other forms of online gambling to the state.
What is available in Indiana?
Indiana’s online gambling market is currently dominated by two main products – online sports betting and daily fantasy sports. Unlike some states, Indiana has chosen not to regulate online gambling or online poker, choosing instead to take advantage of the momentum provided by the landmark US Supreme Court decision in 2018 which effectively gave states the power to legalize sports betting – both land-based and online.
Although Indiana has not included other major verticals of online gambling in any passed bills, given the widespread availability of casinos in Indiana, online poker and online casinos will likely eventually come to Indiana as well.

Online sports betting in Indiana
Sportsbetting is the featured online gaming product in Indiana, with the vast amount of wagering activity online occurring at the state’s dozen or so online sportsbooks, which are required to partner with an existing Indiana retail casino and pay a licensing fee of $100,000.
Almost every type of sports betting is offered through Indiana online sportsbooks with few restrictions on sports or bet types. Yes, this includes the ability for Indiana sports fans to wager on their favorite teams including the Pacers, Colts, Indiana Hoosiers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and on events such as the Indianapolis 500. In addition to major American sports, you will also be able to put money on less popular sports such as tennis and golf as well as International sports such as soccer, rugby or cricket, to name a few.

Online poker in Indiana
Online poker is not currently regulated by Indiana as it has yet to be included in any passed online gambling regulation bill to date. There are live poker rooms available in 9 different Indiana casinos, so there is likely to be at least some level of appetite for an online form of poker soon.
Despite the prevalence of live poker rooms, however, Indiana has a relatively low population (6.7 million) that would likely make it difficult to sustain a robust online poker market with Indiana residents alone. This means that online poker probably won’t be a priority until there is more clarity on the legality of inter-state player pools (across state lines).
Online casinos in Indiana
Online casinos are a glaring hole for online gamblers in Indiana, but it is not because of a lack of interest from Indiana casinos. The state has so far only successfully passed legalized sports betting, but with other states seeing huge revenues and few problems, it could be only a matter of time before Indiana lawmakers decide to bring online casinos to the state as well.
Online sports betting is a palatable first step, but with neighboring Michigan set to bring online casinos to the state soon, Indiana may feel compelled to get in on the action.
Other IN online gambling
Apart from online sports betting, the primary form of regulated real money games is daily fantasy sports, which is available in over 40 states through the United States. Providers such as DraftKings and FanDuel conveniently offer online betting through the same site, giving sports fans a centralized spot for sports betting and DFS.
There is no lottery in Indiana, which likely would not come until online casinos are legalized in the state. Unfortunately, this also means that Hoosier lottery players can not purchase lottery tickets online but can check whether they have won.
A history of Indiana Online Gambling
Gambling was effectively banned until 1988, when Indiana voters approved a constitutional amendment that allowed for the establishment of the Hoosier Lottery. This was followed by pari-mutuel better in 1989 and the first race track opening in 1995 with casinos following.
The bill that ultimately relegated Indiana online sports betting was introduced in January of 2018 as HB1015 ahead of the US Supreme Court overturning existing law, effectively giving states the opportunity to legalize sports betting. After the Supreme Court made their landmark decision, the bill moved through the legislature before being signed by Governor Eric Holcomb in May 2019.
The first online sportsbooks went live in October 2019, around the start of the NFL season, which included established online sportsbooks such asBetRivers, DraftKings and FanDuel. Since then, a handful of others have gone live within the first year of the market opening up.
