Colorado was the 18th state to legalize sports betting, going live with sports betting in May 2020 with both land-based and mobile/online sports books.
Sports bettors in Colorado have a large selection of online sports books to choose from in the state, including a few top well-known operators as well as some branded online sportsbooks. Land-based sportsbooks are also popping up across the state, giving bettors another option if you visit one of the state’s casinos.
Although online casinos and online poker have been put on the back-burner in Colorado, the state is home to widespread land-based casinos in mountain-towns. Online gambling has been met with stiff resistance so far, but given that casino gambling is already present, it would not be surprising to see online casinos eventually come to this increasingly progressive state.
What is available in Colorado?
The state has yet to give the go ahead on online casinos and online poker, but thanks to a 2018 US Supreme Court decision overturning PAPSA, states were finally greenlighted to legalize sports betting. In the wake of the decision, Colorado was among a couple dozen states that jumped at the chance to legalize and regulate.Â
There are now nearly a dozen Colorado online sportsbooks available in the state, providing a very competitive environment, benefiting sports bettors with improved bonuses and a better user experience.
Daily fantasy sports is also available in Colorado with major providers including DraftKings and FanDuel. Colorado residents shouldn’t expect immediate results to regulate other forms of online gambling but with Colorado housing its fair share of land-based casinos, it could easily happen in the intermediate term, especially once voters and legislators see the benefits from sports betting.

This includes the ability for you to bet on your favorite Colorado sports teams including the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets.Â

Online poker in Colorado
Live poker rooms are available in four Colorado casino towns including Black Hawk, Colorado Springs and Denver. However, online poker is not an option at this time as the state has chosen to focus on online sports betting for now.
Players who are looking to play online poker legally will be limited to sites such as Global Poker, which use a sweepstakes model, utilizing “Sweeps Coins” at the table instead of real money.
Widespread online poker is not imminent but possible for Colorado in the future. Casinos that house poker rooms will likely be associated with any online poker sites, if and when they are finally regulated.
Online casinos in Colorado
The lack of online casino regulation in Colorado is a disappointment, but it has been awhile since a major effort was made to legalize online casinos in the state. This is at least partially due to the fact that casino gambling is limited to mountain towns and online gambling could be seen as more of a threat than other states.
Still, with online gambling spreading across the United States it could be sooner than you would think, especially if online sports betting continues to be a success. Keep an eye on neighboring states, as any movement there could force Colorados hand.
Other CO Online Gambling

There are a couple executions for horse racing and daily fantasy sports, which are both widely available across the United States. Players can access top daily fantasy sports sites such as DraftKings and FanDuel, which users can access in addition to the online sportsbook.Â

Widespread gambling in Colorado originally passed in 1991 through Colorado Amendment 50, but limited its operations to three Colorado mountain towns including Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek in an effort to preserve the history of these historic places. Allowed games under Colorado law include slots, video poker as well as table games such as blackjack, craps, roulette, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, 3 card poker and 4 card poker.
Sports betting was passed in 2019 which put the issue to a ballot vote, passing narrowly and ultimately bringing sports betting to market in the state in May 2020.
