Next up in our look at some of the top slot games you can play at our featured casinos, is another classic from NetEnt. If Starburst took you into space on an adventure on the reels, then Gonzo’s Quest is a slot that took you back in time to the age of exploration.
The game is set in central/southern America and features a Spanish conquistador by the name of Gonzo, who is on a quest to find as much gold and jewels as he can in the New World. The character of Gonzo is neatly animated and accompanies you throughout the game by being stood close to the reels.
Released in 2011, this was one of the first slots to feature a different type of reel set, Avalanche Reels. Sure you still had the same 5×3 look to the slot, but rather than reels, symbols dropped down into position from above. Back then, this was a relatively new addition to the slots genre but it has now been used by many slots and under many different names (rolling reels, cascading reels etc).
Playable from just $0.20 per spin, there is a potential jackpot available of 37,500x your stake, which is a sizeable prize, especially when you consider that you can ramp up the size of your bet to a hefty $50 per spin, if you are a higher roller.

Graphics & Sounds – 8/10
What I like about the Gonzo’s Quest slot is that the graphics and animations are excellent and portray the story nicely. Gonzo, who has nothing to do with the famous Muppets character of the same name, is deep in a Central or South American forest, trying to unlock the treasures of a tomb.
The character of Gonzo is animated on the left of the reels and he makes a number of utterances and sounds throughout the game, celebrating when you win for example. It is a nice touch and helps bring the game to life.
The animations of the Avalanche Reels aspect of the game is nicely done and the background graphics are lush and green and nice to look at. This is enhanced by a very expansive sound and musical accompaniment that fits the game very nicely.
It’s incredible to think that this game is ten years old this year and it still looks and sounds as fresh as the day it was released, which is undoubtedly part of its long term appeal.
Gameplay – 10/10
Where Gonzo’s Quest does score very highly with players is in terms of how much fun you have when playing the game. You do hit wins on the slot pretty regularly, but they do tend to be lower value wins with the occasional higher value wins thrown in.
Larger wins come from triggering the main features of the game. With Avalanche Reels, one of the best aspects of the slot is that one win can trigger another. That is because when you land a win, the winning symbols on the reels part of the win will pay you out, then disappear. The symbols above them drop down into the empty positions and fresh symbols are added to the reels, which can create additional wins.
It is this ability to string wins together that is how you can land the bigger value wins on the slot, because with each Avalanche Win spin you trigger, a Multiplier Trail will increase by one. It goes from 1x to 5x in the base game.
This does make playing the base game a huge amount of fun, especially when you string several Avalanche Wins together and it is also the main mechanic that can lead to even bigger value wins in the Free Spins bonus round on the slot.
The Question Mark symbol is the Wild symbol and it can be used to replace any of the standard symbols on the reel and it is certainly one of the most important symbols on the reels in terms of helping players land wins.
Bonus Features – 9/10
If you can trigger the Free Fall Scatter on the first, second and third reels on the same spin, you will launch the main bonus feature of the slot, the Free Falls feature.
Here you get 10 Free Spins but with an increased Multiplier on Avalanche Wins. This Multiplier is three times as valuable as the base game multiplier, with wins from 3x to 15x for your Avalanche Reel wins.
Furthermore, if you land three more Scatters on the reels, you will get another 10 Free Spins added to your total. It is during this bonus round in particular that you can land some of the better value wins in the game (and it is where you could also win the top jackpot prize too).
It is hard to put into words how ground-breaking the Avalanche Reels system was when the Gonzo’s Quest slot was first released all those years ago. It was the first slot to have this feature and without doubt, it has added to the appeal of the game and helped it stand the test of time.
However, there is more to Gonzo’s Quest timeless appeal than just that feature. The game itself is very neatly put together and offers players a great balance of risk and reward. This is enhanced further by some very amusing and beautifully animated touches (watching Gonzo moonwalk when you land a win is always great fun). Add to that it is relatively cheap to play and offers a high jackpot prize and it is easy to see why it has remained a popular slot over all this time.
