“I ain’t afraid of no ghost!” sang Ray Parker Jnr in his number one hit single “Ghostbusters”. Taken from the film of the same name, which proved to be a smash hit back in 1984, after a poorly received sequel in 1989 and an all-female reboot in 2016, a brand new film, Ghostbusters:Afterlife hits cinemas in November 2021.
With Halloween just having passed us by, the new film’s imminent release and the fact that there are a couple of fantastic Ghostbuster slot games you can play right now at DraftKings Casino, it seems like the perfect time to explore a little more about the franchise, its films and of course, its slot games.

The Hit Film Of 1984
Written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, who starred alongside Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis and Ernie Hudson, Ivan Reitman directed the film that became the surprise hit of 1984. It tells the tale of three college graduates in parapsychology, who develop a method to capture and store ghosts.
This simple premise, combined with some stellar special effects for the time and a strong comedic element that made the film suitable for all ages, saw the film become a huge success eventually earning $242.2 million in the United States and Canada, and $295.2 million worldwide.
It was the most successful comedy film of the 1980s and its titular song was also a smash hit in the charts, with the video featuring the four Ghostbusters dancing alongside singer Ray Parker Jnr, plus a host of cameos from Hollywood actors and actresses singing along.
The Ghostbusters Franchise
The success of the original film has since spawned an entire Ghostbuster industry. A sequel was released in 1989 but received mixed reviews and it failed to capture the public’s imagination and interest in the way the original film had.
Actor Bill Murray also revealed his disappointment with the second film, so much so that despite clamouring for a third film, Murray was not really interested in revisiting the role.
A number of cartoon series were developed under the Ghostbuster name and these also met with some success on the small screen, including the Real Ghostbusters, which ran for seven seasons and over 140 episodes.
In 2009, the original team did combine their talents for the Ghostbusters Video Game, which was a big success. However, the 2016 reboot of the original film, with an all-female cast, was considered a flop at the box office.
However, a new reboot, featuring descendents of the original Ghostbusters, plus a cameo or two from some of the original cast, is set to be released this month, Ghostbusters Afterlife is directed by Ivan Reitman’s son Jason and it is one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year.
That said, if you feel the need to bust some ghosts right now, and you would like the opportunity to play a few spins, then there are a couple of fantastic casino games available right now based on the spooky franchise.
Ghostbusters Spectral Search Game
The first game you can play is Ghostbusters Spectral Search, which sees you undertaking the role of a prospective member of the Ghostbusters team, testing a brand new piece of kit, the Spectral Processing Optical Operation Kit (S.P.O.O.K) sensor.
If you can help the Ghostbusters complete the job, then you can earn a place on the team.
This is not a slot game, but instead a game where you play through different scenes taken from the film and try to trap ghosts by selecting the squares in which they are located on screen. Collect all the ghosts to move on to the next level.
If you can collect between two and four of the same ghosts, then you will win a cash prize which ranges from 1x your stake up to 1,000x your stake.
So if you love the original Ghostbusters film and want the chance to revisit some of the iconic locations and ghosts that made it so popular, then Ghostbusters Spectral Search is a great way to do this. You can play from $0.50 to $10.00 per game and you have two rooms to clear and collect enough of the same ghosts to earn a payout.
It is a very simple game, more of a scratchcard game than a slot, but it is a perfect choice for anybody that loves the Ghostbuster franchise and would like to play a game based on it.
Ghostbusters Level Up Plus Slot
However, if a slot game is more your thing and you were a big fan of the original film, then the Ghostbusters Level Up Plus slot is the perfect choice for you.
This is a 5×3 reel slot that features many of the characters, ghosts, locations and tools used by the Ghostbusters team in the original movie.
The Ghostbusters logo acts as the in game Wild symbol and this can substitute for all the standard symbols in the game, bit not the Ghost Battle symbols which appear only on the third reel.
When one of these nine different Ghost Battle symbols does appear on the third reel, you need to zap the ghost with your proton pack in order to make it retreat and be captured. When the ghost’s health is depleted, you capture the ghost and level up.
During the battle, Ghost Wild symbols may be dropped and when you win the battle, the leftmost Ghost Wild is awarded for the next spin. These can be multiplier Wilds (3x to 25x), Expanding Wilds (in different directions across the reels) and additional Wilds on the reels.
The game also features a Zuul Free Spins bonus game, which is triggered when you land the Bonus symbol on the first, third and fifth reels in the game. You can trigger up to 25 Free Spins in this bonus game and any Ghost Wilds on the reels are locked in position during the bonus round.
With 20 pay lines in play, the slot is not too expensive to play from just $0.20 per spin and it is the perfect preparation for Ghostbusters Afterlife’s release later this month.
So if you are ready to bust some ghosts, head to DraftKings Casino, but don’t forget your Proton Pack and stay well clear of the marshmallows!
